MOTOR RACING ROUNDUP : Robinson Makes Late Move to Take First at Watkins Glen

Chip Robinson slipped past Davy Jones’ Jaguar with five laps remaining to win the Camel Continental VII IMSA Camel GT prototype sports car race Sunday at Watkins Glen, N.Y.

Robinson moved his Nissan GTP ZX-Turbo underneath Jones’ car in turn five and pulled away when Jones pitted on the final lap with engine problems.

Robinson’s margin of victory was 57.695 seconds over the Porsche 962C, co-driven by James Weaver of England and Hurley Haywood of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Bob Earl of Leesburg, Va., co-drove the winning car with Robinson. They averaged a record 114.995 m.p.h. and earned $100,000, including a $60,000 Camel Pyramid bonus.

Jones, of Cortland, N.Y., and co-driver Alain Ferte of France finished third, one lap down.

Doug Chandler of Salinas, Calif., averaged a track record 102.466 mph to win the Superbike feature event of the American Motorcyclist Assn.’s Super Cycle competition at the Road America road-racing course, in Elkhart Lake, Wis.

Chandler’s Kawasaki topped the previous record of 101.687 m.p.h., set by Doug Polen in 1988.

Chandler finished the 15-lap, 60-mile race about six seconds ahead of runner-up Randy Renfrow, Honda’s three-time national champion, from Fredericksburg, Va. Jamie James of Prairieville, La., finished third on a Ducati.
