A man whose nude body was found floating face down in Sweetwater Reservoir in Spring Valley was identified Wednesday as a 29-year-old San Diegan, authorities said.

The body, identified as that of Johnny Smith by the San Diego County medical examiner’s office, was spotted shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday by a man who was fishing near a house that backs up to the waterline in the 9500 block of San Carlos Street, according to a Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

An autopsy determined that Smith drowned, but police said Wednesday that it was not known how Smith came to be in the water or why he was nude. The investigation into the incident is continuing, police said.
