Closures of Peninsula Schools

Share

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District has completed the final draft of an environmental study of school closures on the peninsula, school district officials said Tuesday.

The district conducted the study in response to a 1988 court order by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Miriam Vogel prohibiting the district from closing Miraleste High School until an environmental study was completed.

The study concludes that traffic congestion on stretches of some crowded roads would worsen if Miraleste were closed. Shortages of student parking at Palos Verdes and Rolling Hills high schools would also grow worse unless mitigating measures were adopted, the study states.

Dates for public hearings on the study have not been set, although they will probably be held in September, said district spokeswoman Nancy Mahr. Comment received at the hearings will be included in the final report.

A copy of the study is available for public review at the district’s headquarters, 3801 Via La Selva, Palos Verdes Estates. Copies have also been distributed to local libraries and schools where summer classes are being held.
