A herd of elephants went on a rampage in a northern village, trampling a man to death, smashing crops and forcing 200 people to flee their homes.

Panggung village chief M. Nafi said the herd is believed to have come to the village for revenge after seeing four elephant carcasses at the rim of the forest, the daily Jakarta Post reported today. The carcasses were of elephants killed by poachers for their ivory, it said.
