A 28-year-old Simi Valley man spent Wednesday night in jail after recklessly firing an AK-47 assault rifle in his neighborhood, police said.

Lloyd Forrester was released Thursday on $5,000 bail from the Ventura County Jail’s East Valley Subdivision. He was held on suspicion of discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner, a felony, said Lt. Bob Klamser of the Simi Valley Police Department.

Police recovered 90 shell casings in the street and sidewalk areas of the 1200 block of Fitzgerald Road about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. The rifle and 100 unfired shells were also recovered, Klamser said.

The state Legislature has banned the sale of assault rifles, including AK-47s. Under the law, owners who purchased such guns before Jan. 1 must register the guns with the state by the end of the year to continue to possess them legally.
