Proposed Rights Act Tops NAACP Agenda
A proposed Civil Rights Act of 1990 and concerns over racism will be dominant issues at the upcoming NAACP annual convention at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the organization’s executive director said Friday.
Benjamin Hooks charged Friday that the U.S. Supreme Court has “turned back the clock on civil rights” through a series of rulings that have eroded gains made by blacks.
“We are here to put impetus on the Civil Rights Restoration Act,” Hooks said. The act, which the Senate is to debate this year, will give President Bush an opportunity to prove he is committed to improving job opportunities for blacks, Hooks said. The NAACP’s five-day gathering opens Sunday.
