Two Student-Teacher Teams Will Tour Japan

Students Buddy Blaydes and Julie Snyder and teachers Sheralin Conkey and Carol Crane have been selected to form two student-teacher teams for Japan Trails, an all-expenses-paid, two-week study tour of Japan.

The two teams were selected on the basis of an original artwork they created based on the theme “What I Know About Modern Japan.” The trip is sponsored by the Asia Society and TDK Corp., a videotape and audio-tape manufacturer.

The Blaydes-Conkey team will represent the Tustin Unified School District, and the Snyder-Crane team will represent the Irvine Unified School District.

The tour will take place July 14-28.

Mission Viejo High School junior Kristen Smith, who has a 4.64 grade-point average, was named winner of Smith College’s annual Smith Book Award to recognize her academic excellence and leadership. The award was provided by the Smith Club of Orange County. The college is in Northampton, Mass.

Huyen Nguyen, of Orange High School, won first place and $400 in the 10th annual American Free Enterprise Essay Contest sponsored by Rockwell International Corp.’s Anaheim-Newport chapter of the National Management Assn.

Jeff Wilhelmi of El Dorado High won second place and $300, and Jennifer Kingham of Valencia High placed third and won $200. The contest was open to seniors in the Orange and Placentia Unified School Districts and Heritage High in Fullerton.

The contest theme was “American Free Enterprise and How it Affects the Quality of Our Lives.”

Corona del Mar resident and Newport Beach restaurateur Hans Prager was named a winner in the Dewar’s Distinguished Do-ers Award for his volunteer community service. He has helped raise $375,000 for a number of area charities and is active in several other volunteer activities. Dewar’s makes Scotch whiskey.

The Orange County Chapter of the American Heart Assn. honored 10 elementary students at a recent California Angels game for raising thousands of dollars in the Jump Rope for Heart program.

The students and the money raised include Anne Blair, $1,048 and Katie Blair, $1,408, both of Brea; Lindsey Dorris, $700 and Nichol McGeoy, $700, both of Newport Beach; Aaron Lim, $617, Fullerton; Julie Miral, $750, Jeff Simmons, $500, Alison Rimpau, $300, and Laura Atkinson, $354, all of Huntington Beach; and Michael Madanat, La Habra, $385.

The children raised money by forming a team and having sponsors pay for every minute the team continued to jump rope.

Tustin resident Paul Lin was named winner of the Myrt Purkiss $1,000 scholarship by the Art Alliance of Cal State Fullerton. The award is given to an incoming freshman student.

Seventh-grader Korina Schellhase of Yorba Linda was awarded $25 from the California State Division of the American Assn. of University Women for her portrayal of Madame Marie Sklodowska Curie at the recent History Day competition in Sacramento.

Korina, who attends Bernardo Yorba Junior High School, advanced to the state finals after winning second place in the Orange County History Day Contest. The contest was sponsored by the State Department of Education.

The California Society of Internal Medicine has named Dr. Laurence D. Wellikson, an Orange physician and Irvine resident, as its president for 1990-91.

The South Coast Literacy Council certified 16 new tutors at the Heritage Library in Irvine as a part of the group’s program to teach English, according to supervising trainer Betty J. Kent of Irvine..

They are Eun AhSong, Beth Arata, Arnold Berman, Jackie Clark, Lesly Earls, Gladys Grunewald, Barbara Huebner, Pat Jones, Thuy Le, Carleen Satermo and Mary Townsend, all of Irvine; Shirley Baxter, Laguna Niguel; Dorothy Mummert, Newport Beach; Gayle Parido and Ian Robertson, Laguna Beach; and Clare Salaveria, Fountain Valley.

Fullerton resident Sharon Moroni, a secretary in the Fullerton Joint Unified School District, has been named “Classified Employee of the Year.” The 24-year district veteran was selected by a committee of school employees.
