One of the great classics of the world cinema, Kenji Mizoguchi’s exquisite 1953 ghost story was one of the three films--the others being “Rashomon” and “Gate of Hell”--which brought the Japanese cinema international acclaim. With Machiko Kyo (who starred in the other two films as well) and Kinuyo Tanaka (above), known as the Bette Davis of Japan.
