Vandals ransacked several classrooms at a Newbury Park elementary school over the weekend, smashing holes in walls and doors and destroying lighting fixtures and plumbing, authorities said.

Damage was estimated at more than $40,000.

“They did a good number on the place,” Ventura County Sheriff’s Lt. Tony Ditzhazy said.

Ditzhazy said at least three vandals broke into Walnut Elementary School between Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. He said they broke into five classrooms and a storage room.

“Obnoxious and obscene” graffiti directed at Principal Bradley Baker and other staff members was spray-painted on walls and doors, Ditzhazy said.

He said the vandals smashed 8- to 10-foot holes in walls and doors, damaging ceiling and floor tiles.
