A 21-year-old Santa Ana man died of massive head injuries, apparently after he fell asleep at the wheel of his car, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol in Oceanside said.
Francisco Guerrero died at 6:26 a.m. Monday at Palomar Medical Center, a few hours after the accident, said Jerry Bohrer, a spokesman for the CHP.
Guerrero was northbound on Interstate 5 at Encinitas Boulevard when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel, drifted onto the right shoulder, then veered left across all four lanes of traffic into the center rail, Bohrer said.
A passenger in the car, 25-year-old Jose Contreras of Santa Ana, was also taken to a hospital.
