Sierra Madre : Garden Plot Rules Adopted

Share

Prompted by growing concern over garden aesthetics, the City Council on Tuesday adopted new guidelines governing the use of plots at the Community Garden that call for monthly review of individual plots.

“Some gardeners only garden in the spring, some only in the fall, some only occasionally,” said City Manager Jim McRea. “The problem is how to keep it looking good (year-round).”

Under the new guidelines, plots are to be kept free of weeds and dead leaves. Pets are prohibited, and compost heaps may not exceed two feet in height. Fences of three feet or less are allowable, though they may not be locked to prevent access.

Failure to meet the requirements may result in the loss of garden privileges.

The city rents 12 garden plots to residents for $10 each quarter, or $40 per year. The fee goes toward water costs, McRea said. The garden, used to grow flowers and vegetables, is located near City Hall, just south of the tennis courts.

The Parks and Recreation Commission will review the effect of the new policy and reassess the condition of the Community Garden in December.
