Torrance Opposes New Sewage Outfall

Share

The Torrance City Council has gone on record opposing a second sewage outfall in the Santa Monica Bay unless it is built near the present outfall.

The 7-0 vote Tuesday night was sparked by the city of Los Angeles’ discussions about building a second ocean outfall to carry treated sewage from the mammoth Hyperion sewage plant. One of the three proposed routes for the outfall would lead to waters off Redondo Beach.

“This is one of the most important things that’s occurring environmentally in the South Bay area,” said Councilman Dan Walker, who raised the issue.

The project is still in initial planning stages, and an environmental impact report will not be ready before spring, 1991.
