Santa Monica : Panel to Push School Bond
A steering committee has been formed to push for passage in November of a $75-million general obligation bond measure to help repair buildings in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
School board member Connie Jenkins said four community leaders have agreed to serve as committee co-chairs: Nat Trives, assistant superintendent, government relations at Santa Monica College; Bill Mortensen, president of First Federal Savings Bank of California; Brad Jones, co-chairman of Santa Monicans for Renters Rights, and Pat Cairns, a teacher at Malibu Park School.
The committee has hired the Los Angeles political consulting firm Seigel & Nichol to run its campaign.
The committee is trying to raise more than $100,000 to support the bond measure, which would require the approval of more than two-thirds of the voters, Jenkins said.
“It’s really necessary to build a consensus (in favor of the measure) in the community and not have happen what happened in Beverly Hills,” she said.
A similar bond measure for Beverly Hills schools came up five votes short in the June 5 election.
