Port’s Rule Could Make It Harder for Angels to Get Teed Off on Road

The Angels have troubles, after losing seven of their last 11 road games.

And Mike Port wants to be sure no one thinks the club’s problem might be clubs--golf clubs.

After nine sets of clubs were taken on the Angels’ recent trip, Executive Vice President Port issued a memo to Leonard Garcia, the team’s equipment manager, giving golf clubs the hook. Players are now prohibited from taking clubs on the road.

Port expressed concern over the additional baggage, but pointedly added that “the appearance of clubs with our equipment is not good when we are not getting on-field results.”

Among the players, club reaction was mixed.

“ My club reaction is a slice, normally,” Chili Davis said. “As far as I’m concerned, golf is not the reason we’re playing like . . .”

Only two sets of clubs belonged to players, Garcia said.

Davis said he seldom golfs on the road and that he never golfs on a day he expects to play. But the new rule would be little deterrent, he said.

“Put it this way: Ever since I’ve been playing golf, you’ve always been able to rent clubs at the club.”
