3 NFL Pension Trustees Must Pay $25 Million
A six-person federal jury in Baltimore found Thursday that three management trustees of the NFL pension plan must contribute more than $25 million in back payments and interest.
The jury found that management failed to contribute $12.5 million from March 31, 1986, to March 30, 1987, and $5,348,160 since then. In addition, they found management failed to make a $163,713 payment for interest owed from 1984.
Joseph A. (Chip) Yablonski, a lawyer for the three player trustees who brought the suit, said the total payments, including interest at 12% per year, would total more than $25 million.
The three trustees--former Chicago Bear Dan Jiggetts, former Kansas City Chief Tom Condon and former union head Ed Garvey--filed suit against the three management trustees: Phoenix Cardinal owner Bill Bidwell, Minnesota Viking General Manager Mike Lynn and former New York Jet president Jim Kensil.
An appeal is expected.
