THE SIDELINES : Senna Leads in British Qualifier

Ayrton Senna sped his McLaren-Honda to the fastest lap in the opening qualifying session and won the provisional pole position today for Sunday’s British Grand Prix.

Senna, who already holds the Formula One record with 46 pole positions and has started from the No. 1 spot in four of the seven races this season, had a best lap of 1 minute, 08.071 seconds around the 2.97-mile track.

His McLaren-Honda teammate, Gerhard Berger, had the second-fastest time of 1:08.071. Berger has won the pole position in two races this season.

The 30 drivers will have another qualifying session Saturday, with the top 26 starting in Sunday’s race.
