One man was fatally shot and another was injured when a fight broke out among members of two gangs outside a Panorama City bar early Friday, Los Angeles police said.

Police said about 15 men were leaving Doohinkey’s bar in the 8900 block of Woodman Avenue about 2 a.m. when a fight broke out in the parking lot. An unidentified man pulled a gun and fired three or four shots.

Jason Jefferson, 22, of Los Angeles, was struck in the head by a bullet, and Derrick Potter, 20, also of Los Angeles, was shot in the hip. Both men were put in cars by friends who sped from the parking lot, Lt. Warren Knowles said.

Knowles said Jefferson was in a pickup truck whose driver flagged down a police car in the 8500 block of Van Nuys Boulevard. Paramedics were called, but Jefferson was dead when they arrived.

Potter was driven to a nearby doughnut shop where police were called. He was being treated at an undisclosed hospital for the hip wound.

No suspects were arrested in the shooting and the cause of the fight was unknown. Members of a gang from Pacoima and a gang from South Los Angeles had been in the bar, but the groups had no history of being rivals, Knowles said. The gunman was believed to be a member of the Pacoima-based gang.

Knowles said there had been no previous reports of gang problems at the bar.
