Waste in the Navy

Share

I would like to comment on the article regarding the Navy and myself (“Reprimanded Navy Doctor Cites Example of Waste,” July 4). Unfortunately the story missed the point entirely.

The real issue, besides the waste of $25,000, was the abuse of the system. Linda Monroe didn’t mention the fact that the servicewoman worked for Adm. (Edward) Baker and thus received preferential treatment.

In addition, (the story) seems to suggest that Dr. (Carl) Hartrampf (Jr.) “turned down” this patient when in fact the only reason we couldn’t (operate on) her was a time constraint. Also it should have been made more lucid that Dr. Hartrampf agreed to do the surgery for half his fee to help the Navy out, certainly not to be construed as any collusion with the Navy brass.

I feel very distraught that Dr. Hartrampf had his name mentioned when he was so vehemently against having his name used in the press.

One more issue could also have been made more clear--the servicewoman in question wasn’t offered the services of Dr. Hartrampf. She was quite cognizant that, only if our 56-year-old woman wasn’t selected, then she would be evaluated.
