Kellick Surges to Triumph in Saugus Feature

As if he were just plain sick and tired of all the delays during the 20-lap three-quarter Midget main event at Saugus Speedway on Saturday night, Steve Kellick of Bakersfield sealed his win in decisive and impressive fashion.

After shattering his one-lap qualifying track record earlier in the afternoon, Kellick roared into third, second and then first place on laps 15, 16 and 17, respectively, after cars went sideways, caught fire and turned on their sides.

Gary Schroeder of Burbank took an immediate lead, starting on the outside pole and flying past pole position driver Wiley Miller of Buena Park on the back straightaway.

But Kellick took the lead from Schroeder on Turn 1 of Lap 7, only to lose it one lap later on the same turn when he went sideways on Turn 1 of Lap 8.

Kellick, 28, has made the Saugus track his own little playground. In his three races at Saugus, he has broken the one-lap qualifying track record each time and recorded two main-event wins and one second-place finish.

So dominant was his driving on Saturday that he broke his one-lap qualifying record by .53 seconds, a huge margin in three-quarter Midget racing.

Kellick, the 1989 Rookie of the Year who drives without a sponsor, had to come from the back of the pack after his spinout on Lap 7. But come back he did, finishing almost a half-lap ahead of second-place Schroeder.

Although the 30-lap Midget main event took some time to get started, it took little time for points leader Sleepy Tripp of Costa Mesa to win.

Tripp took the lead on Lap 7 and drove to a relatively uneventful victory after the race underwent three restarts.

Form followed as second-place points driver Robby Flock of the City of Industry took second place in the main event.

In the 25-lap Hobby Stock main event, Oliver Aguilar of Sun Valley aggressively moved into the lead en route to a decisive win.

On Turn 4 of Lap 13, Aguilar passed Mike McAtee of North Hollywood and never looked back, winning the event by more than half a lap over second-place Mark Miller of Chatsworth.

For the last 10 laps, Aguilar enjoyed a lead of a full straightaway.

Oscar Sevilla of Mission Hills won the 15-lap Jalopy main event.
