One section of the Sheriff’s Department headquarters should be more secure today, since a private security system company rigged it with a “state-of-the-art” alarm.

Morse Alarm Systems donated an alarm system valued at $5,000 to the sheriff’s Crime Analysis Unit at a ceremony Tuesday.

The Crime Analysis Unit uses computers to determine patterns of criminal activity and to track career criminals. Equipment stored in the Crime Analysis Unit is worth about $300,000, but the records stored in computers there are even more valuable, according to the department.

With the new system installed, anyone entering will have to use a special card and punch in a secret code to avoid triggering an alarm, said Howard Berlin, a spokesman for the Morse company. Infrared motion detectors are also part of the alarm package.

“We heard about the Crime Analysis Unit and thought it would be a good cause,” Berlin said in explaining why his company had donated the equipment.
