Census Drive Focuses on 3 Cities in County
In a last-ditch attempt to count residents in Oxnard, Port Hueneme and Ventura for the U.S. Census, workers will cruise through neighborhoods, sit outside shopping centers and visit churches in the county’s only Censusmobile.
During the next nine days, until the July 27 deadline that marks the end of the 1990 Census, residents will be urged to complete questionnaires.
“We’re doing a last-minute push, especially in the Spanish-speaking communities, to get people to fill out forms,” said Karl Lawson, coordinator of the Census Outreach Campaign, a joint program sponsored by Oxnard, Port Hueneme and Ventura.
Working from the Censusmobile, a former bookmobile converted into a mobile office, the workers and volunteers will hand out one-page questionnaires written in English and Spanish. Since last month, when distribution of the short forms began, more than 1,100 residents have been counted, Lawson said.
“We’re trying to spread the word,” he said, “but it seems as if there is a never-ending flow of people who have been overlooked.”
