Chargers Sign Third-Round Pick Goeas

The Chargers have agreed to terms with two more draft choices, including third-round selection Leo Goeas, an offensive tackle from Hawaii, General Manager Bobby Beathard said Tuesday.

Goeas, 6-feet-4 and 285 pounds, was the second of three Charger picks in the third round and the last to come to terms. Goeas, an All-Western Athletic Conference selection, was the 60th player taken overall.

Also agreeing to terms was cornerback Ken Berry, a 10th-round choice from Miami. Berry, 6-2 and 185, had 43 tackles and four interceptions as a senior. He was the 256th player selected overall.

Beathard declined to provide details of the agreements. But Goeas’ agent, Mark Bartelstein of Chicago, said Goeas has agreed to a two-year contract.

The Chargers also announced they have signed free-agent wide receiver Troy Johnson and released two others.

Johnson, 27, has 41 catches for 777 yards and two touchdowns with in four seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions. He was had two catches for 29 yards last season before he was cut by the Lions after the ninth game.

Released were Bobby Bankston, who was on Tampa Bay’s developmental squad last season as a rookie out of East Texas State, and Steve Shelley, a rookie from Fresno State.

The moves leave the Chargers with 92 players on their roster. That includes 10 veterans and eight draft choices who have not agreed to terms. Training camp at UC San Diego opens Friday for rookies and selected veterans.
