The former Wilmington library on West Opp Street would be renovated and reopened as a community building under a proposal by Los Angeles City Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores.

In a motion to the council Tuesday, Flores proposed that the city refurbish the building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, by September and begin leasing space to community groups. Under her plan, the Wilmington Historical Society would receive a five-year lease for 600 square feet of the 3,700-square-foot building. The society would be charged $1 per year for the space, she said.

Flores’ motion also asks that the building be cleaned and painted and that its roof be repaired, bathrooms modernized and bookshelves removed. Her proposal was referred to the council’s Public Works Committee.
