Add Toronto Blue Jays hitting Coach Gene Tenace to the list of candidates for the St. Louis Cardinals managing job.

Tenace told the Hamilton Spectator that he has been given permission by Blue Jays Manager Cito Gaston and Vice President Pat Gillick to talk with Cardinals General Manager Dal Maxvill.

“They both told me to go for it,” Tenace said. “I wondered about what the possibility of leaving the team at this point of the season would do to the club, but they said to try to do the best for my own career.”

Red Schoendienst has managed the Cardinals on an interim basis since Whitey Herzog resigned July 6.

Maxvill, who played with Tenace on the Cardinals’ 1982 World Series championship team, is reported to have spoken with six candidates. Angels broadcaster Joe Torre and former Houston Manager Hal Lanier are considered the leading candidates.
