Officials closed a section of Laurel Street about noon Thursday after a tanker truck spilled oil onto the roadway, according to Gary Stephany, a spokesman for the county’s Environmental Health Services Department.
Drivers for the Solar Turbine Co. were moving a turbine from the firm’s Harbor Drive plant to a plant in Kearny Mesa about 11:40 a.m. when the accident occurred, Stephany said.
“A drain plug (on the turbine) was left unplugged,” Stephany said. “About 5 to 10 gallons of oil spilled onto the street.”
While workers were cleaning up the spill, the eastbound section of Laurel Street between India Street and Kettner Boulevard was closed for about 2 1/2 hours, Stephany said.
