Black Man Hit by Truck During Chase by Whites
A black man hit by a truck after he was chased into a street by a group of whites remained in critical condition Saturday as police who patrol the mostly white neighborhood played down similarities with a 1986 clash in New York’s Howard Beach.
Herbert Jennings sustained severe head and chest injuries. He was walking with his white girlfriend in the mostly white neighborhood when a truck driver yelled at him, provoking three white pedestrians to join in with racial slurs and chase him, police said.
The incident resembled one in Howard Beach in which a mob of whites chased a black man to his death on a busy highway.
