COSTA MESA : Council OKs Two Measures for Ballot
Voters in Costa Mesa will decide in November whether to ban the sale and use of all fireworks in the city and whether to limit campaign contributions for City Council races.
The council approved putting the fireworks measure to a public vote after receiving an unusually large number of complaints from residents annoyed by both the legal and illegal fireworks on July 4.
“This year in particular we had a number of letters regarding this,” Councilwoman Mary Hornbuckle said. “I think the time is right.”
Sherrie Neft, 3132 Madeira St., described a close call involving fireworks that occurred as she and her family were leaving their home July 4.
A fireworks device screamed by her elderly mother-in-law and landed on top of their house, startling the family, she said.
The council also approved a ballot measure to prohibit an elected or appointed official from accepting a contribution of $500 or more from anyone who has business pending with the city.
