Alhambra : Funds Sought to Cut Sound
The City Council will apply for a federal grant to make the Royal Gardens Apartments soundproof, rather than sue to force state officials to build a sound wall between the apartments and the San Bernardino (10) Freeway.
Residents of the county-subsidized complex on West Ramona Road have complained about traffic noise and safety hazards. Caltrans officials acknowledged a noise problem, but said they weren’t obligated to install a wall because the freeway had been built before the apartments.
The council will ask the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for money to install noise barriers at courtyard and alley openings and double-paned windows in end units. Resident Michael Rotstan said he is pleased. “The city pulled a rabbit out of a magic hat,” he said Tuesday. “They’re sticking with us when we really needed them.”
