Walter M. Meehan; Retired General Contractor
Walter M. Meehan, a retired general contractor who worked in the Los Angeles area for 25 years, has died in Northridge. He was 73.
A longtime resident of Van Nuys, Meehan died Tuesday of leukemia, said his wife, Lorraine Meehan.
The New York City native moved to Van Nuys in 1965. Meehan worked on numerous construction projects, including Verdugo Hills Hospital, 300 homes on the El Toro U.S. Marine Corps base and the 14-story Ventura County National Bank building in Oxnard.
He retired in 1980 after a 30-year career in construction.
Meehan was a charter member of the North Valley Shrine Club and was serving as third vice president at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years; sons, Walter M. Meehan of Bear, Del., and Al Meehan of Lancaster; a daughter, Carol Sherry of New York City; brothers, James Meehan of Margate, Fla., Edwin Meehan of New York City and Joseph Meehan; sisters Catherine Butler of Ashbury Park, N.J., and Emily O’Loughlin of the Ozone Park portion of Queens, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Pierce Brothers Meyer-Mitchell Mortuary, 5940 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys, which is handling the arrangements. Burial will be private. Donations can be made in Meehan’s name to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children or the City of Hope.
