MOORPARK : School Board Hikes Fee on New Houses

Share

The school fee on new houses will go up an average of $40 under a measure passed by the Moorpark Unified School Board.

On Tuesday the board increased the fees developers must pay on new residential construction from $1.56 to $1.58 per square foot. The fee on a 2,000-square-foot house will be about $3,160, district officials estimated.

The increase is the maximum allowed under state law.

The district estimates that the fees are still nearly $3,000 short of the cost of providing school facilities for every new student. Student enrollment has grown by 11% a year in the past nine years, and the district expects the figure to double again in about five years, said Carmela Vignocchi, assistant superintendent of business services.

To keep pace with the demand for more classroom space, about $47.7 million will be needed to buy property and build schools between now and 1996, according to the district.

To help raise the funds, trustees approved a $25.5-million bond issue earlier this month to be placed on the ballot in November.

In other action, the board agreed to change district boundaries to include the relatively uninhabited property in the Happy Camp section of the county. The area is part of the Fillmore Unified School District.
