Corona del Mar’s Waldrup Loses to Medalist in Broadmoor Invitational

Record-setting medalist Brett Dean of Evergreen, Colo., defeated John Waldrup of Corona del Mar in the first round of match play in the Broadmoor Invitational golf tournament Wednesday.

Dean, a member of the Arizona State men’s golf team, beat Waldrup, who plays for USC, 6-and-5, on the 7,218-yard, par-72 Broadmoor East course. Dean set a tournament qualifying record with 10-under-par 134 for two rounds.

In other first-round matches, John Gilles of Laguna Beach defeated Mark Massengale of Conroy, Texas, 1-up; Jaxon Brigman of Abilene, Texas and Oklahoma State defeated Joe Manion of Corona del Mar, 7-and-5, and David Stockton of Mentone, Calif., and USC, defeated Bob Imlay, 52, San Diego, 3-and-2.

Waldrup will play Peter Myhre, of Dallas, Tex., in today’s championship consolation round. In that round, Manion faces John Austin, of Norman, Okla. The losers will be eliminated.

In the championship round, Gilles will face Jason Spitler, of Mesa, Ariz.

About 230 golfers are competing in the tournament that continues until Sunday’s 36-hole final.
