CARBON CANYON : Downed Power Line Starts Brush Fire

Share

Sparks from a downed power line ignited a 1.5-acre brush fire on Friday--the fourth blaze in a month to strike the hilly region separating Orange and San Bernardino counties.

The fire, which began at 10:30 a.m., scorched a hillside across the street from Bennie Lou’s Nursery in the 16700 block of Carbon Canyon Road, said Orange County Fire Department Capt. Dan Young.

About a dozen Brea and Orange County firefighters took 30 minutes to bring the fire under control, officials said.

Young said crews from Southern California Edison Co. were doing maintenance work on lines near the area and had shut off the power.

When power was restored, a defective line exploded, sending a shower of sparks onto the dry brush.

There were no injuries.

A week ago, firefighters battled a 1-acre brush-fire across from Carbon Canyon Regional Park.

Three weeks ago, a huge fire burned more than 6,000 acres in the canyon and damaged or destroyed 14 buildings near the Sleepy Hollow enclave.

Earlier this month, a fire sparked by a teen-ager launching his model rocket in Chino Hills State Park charred about 6,000 acres.
