ALBUM REVIEWS : *** BUDDY COLLETTE “Flute Talk” Soul Note

Share

James Newton, who was Collette’s longtime student, is the featured guest in this mutually stimulating master-and-pupil convocation. Collette is clearly in control, as composer of most of the tunes and soloist on alto sax, flute and clarinet, while Newton sticks mainly to flute. The melodic charm of “Roshanda,” the down-to-basics mood of “Blues of Torrance” and the totally spontaneous title tune (sans rhythm section) stand out, with pianist Geri Allen adjusting herself to the less than complex settings while bassist Jaribu Shabid and local drummer Gianpiero Prina round out the group in this Milan session. No generation gap bothers Newton, 37, or Collette, 68, in a successful encounter.
