A Guide to the Best of Southern California : GALLERIES : Just Another Day at the Beach

RAD. KILLER. HOT. It’s the world’s only 15-foot surfboard decked out with a saltwater, fish-filled aquarium; a bird cage with a live squawking parrot; a TV, and a VCR. The beach-entertainment board, with its electric-guitar nose, chrome headers, Cadillac fins and working tail lights, is just one of the zany objets d’art on view in the Gallery of Functional Art’s new show, “A Day at the Beach” (which runs through September 10).

This lighthearted exhibition of outdoor beach life features artist-designed furniture--hand-painted umbrellas, palm-frond chairs, a lounge chair shaped like a fish--assorted beach toys, an indoor pier, even a parking lot. Intrepid sorts who wish to feel the sand between their toes are welcome to go barefoot. And to protect the day-at-the-beach-goers’ eyes from the glare of bejeweled there are 25 pairs of artist-designed sunglasses.

Gallery of Functional Art, 2429 Main St. at Edgemar, Santa Monica; (213) 450-2827.
