VENTURA : State Employees Get Child-Care Grant

Share

A one-time state grant of $17,000 has been awarded to a nonprofit organization made up of state employees in Ventura County to provide child-care services for its members.

The state money is part of $1 million in the Child Care Revolving Fund, established in 1984 as a result of a bargaining agreement between the state and the employees union.

In order to apply for child-care grants, state employees are required to form a nonprofit organization, and perform a study and a survey. The Ventura County program is the 15th in the state to receive funding.

Ventura/Oxnard State Employee Child Inc. used the money to buy 16 spaces in the county child-care center, Peppermint Junction County Station in Ventura, said Rose Chacon, president of the nonprofit employees group.

The contract for the spaces is up for renewal every two years.

The center accommodates 50 children, the majority being those of county workers.

Members of the employees group pay $67 per week to enroll a child in the service full time, saving about $25 per week off the average rate at private facilities. Eleven of the 16 spaces are still available.

An open house for the approximately 800 state employees in the county will be held Tuesday at the center, 15 Petit Ave.
