SHORT TAKES : James Brown Release Refused
James Brown’s wife was turned down as his sponsor for live-at-home work release because she, too, is a convicted felon.
“This is just one more thing to give us aggravation,” Adrienne Brown said. “The entire system is unfair. They’re going to ride us into the ground.”
The soul singer’s application for so-called extended work release was denied last week by the state Corrections Department because of Mrs. Brown’s criminal record, department spokesman Francis Archibald said.
Mrs. Brown was convicted of possession of PCP in 1989 and was placed on five years’ probation and fined $5,000.
Brown was released from prison in April after 15 months of a six-year sentence for aggravated assault and avoiding police in a two-state auto chase in 1988.
He lives at a work-release center in Aiken. Mrs. Brown said her husband probably will remain there until he is eligible for parole in December, 1991.
