ANAHEIM : Council to Discuss Possible Pay Raise

The City Council will have a special meeting today to discuss a change in the City Charter that would triple the monthly salary of council members and give the mayor a 50% raise.

The mayor now receives an $800 monthly stipend, and council members each are paid $400. The amendment to the charter, which proposes that council members and the mayor each be paid $1,200 a month, will go before voters in the Nov. 6 election.

In past discussions, the council has been split on the increase. Those who support a raise say it will attract quality candidates to seek the elected positions, and those opposed say that money should not be needed to encourage civic involvement.

The council will discuss the final wording of the proposed amendment during a 4 p.m. meeting at City Hall.
