ANAHEIM : Firefighters Rescued Near Catalina Island

A dozen Anaheim firefighters were pulled from the ocean off Santa Catalina Island on Monday afternoon after a 67-foot sailboat ran aground on a hidden reef during a race from Long Beach, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The schooner Diosa del Mar was sailing in an annual firefighters race with scores of other craft when it grounded at 2:45 p.m. and partially sank on Ship Rock about a mile off Catalina, forcing those aboard into the ocean.

The 82-foot Coast Guard cutter Point Evans, which was in the area on routine patrol, arrived within about two minutes of the accident, took the passengers aboard and put them ashore at Isthmus Cove on the island, a spokesman said.
