Secretary of State James A. Baker III was forced to cancel several meetings here Monday and rest in bed after he suddenly became ill, State Department spokeswoman Margaret Tutwiler said.

The secretary of state departed from a conference of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum to return to his quarters, leaving it to Commerce Secretary Robert A. Mosbacher to give a speech that Baker was scheduled to deliver.

“It’s not something serious. He just doesn’t feel well, and he’s resting today. It’s nothing to be alarmed about,” Tutwiler said. She said Baker had developed a fever by the time he woke up Monday.

Tutwiler said that Baker does not plan to alter the itinerary for the remainder of his 10-day visit to Asia.
