DEL MAR NOTES : Avenue of Flags Will Have Knee Surgery for Bone Chips

Golden Eagle Farm’s Avenue Of Flags, runner-up in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship on July 21, came out of the race with bone chips in a knee and was to undergo surgery today, trainer Dick Mandella reported.

“Dr. Rick Arthur will perform surgery at the Helen Woodward Center,” Mandella said.

The son of Seattle Slew and Beautiful Glass broke his maiden in his only other start before the Juvenile.

Quiet American and Perceive Arrogance, the last two runners-up in the Charles H. Strub Stakes at Santa Anita, will be coming off layoffs to challenge Eclipse Award-winning mare Bayakoa on Saturday in the $150,000-Added Grade III San Diego handicap at 1 1/16 miles.

A distaffer has never won the race.

Other possibilities include Annual Date, Bosphorus, Charlatan, Kunjar and Stylish Winner.

Helped by a four-day Pick Six carry-over that resulted in a North American record pool of $3,406,488 Sunday, first-week figures for the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club are far ahead of those in 1989.

After five days of the 43-day session, on-track attendance is averaging 19,252, up 4.7%, while off-track attendance is averaging 19,385, up 16%, and total attendance is averaging 39,087, up 10.2%.

On-track handle is averaging $3,479,814, up 12.3%, while off- track handle is averaging $4,612,962, up 15.8%, and total handle is averaging $8,092,776, up 14.3%.

Ten juvenile fillies will match strides over six furlongs Wednesday in the 39th edition of the Junior Miss Stakes at Del Mar.

The 2-year-old dash, which this year will carry Grade III status for the first time, will offer a gross purse of $82,025 and a winner’s share of $48,275.
