P.M. BRIEFING : Boeing Wins Round in Crash Suit

OLYMPIA, Wash. — The state Supreme Court ruled today the families of Japanese nationals who died in the crash of a Boeing 747 five years ago in Japan cannot seek damages from the airplane manufacturer in U.S. courts.
The ruling, if it stands, means all the damage claims must be tried in Japanese courts.
The ruling was a major victory for Boeing because high damage awards are much harder to obtain in Japan than in the United States.
The nearly unanimous ruling by the state’s highest court involved claims filed in King County Superior Court on behalf of 71 Japanese nationals who were among 525 victims aboard the Japan Air Lines 747 that slammed into a mountainside Aug. 12, 1985, while en route from Tokyo to Osaka.
