Olden Will Take Over Torre’s Role on Angels’ Televised Games

KTLA named Paul Olden to replace Joe Torre as its Angel play-by-play announcer.

With KTLA televising tonight’s game against Oakland at Anaheim Stadium, Olden begins his new job immediately.

SportsChannel was undecided Wednesday on who it will name as Torre’s replacement, but radio announcer Ken Brett is expected to get the nod. Torre was the SportsChannel commentator.

SportsChannel has had to replace both its announcers this season. Earlier, Joe Garagiola left for NBC’s “Today” show, and Charlie Jones was brought in to handle the play-by-play.

If Brett gets the SportsChannel commentating job, Olden will be his fill-in on radio with Al Conin.

Olden, who was a radio announcer for the Cleveland Indians for two seasons, is also KMPC’s UCLA announcer and the host of the weeknight “Sportsline” shows. Any UCLA conflicts will be worked out later, a spokesman said, and Bob Rowe will handle “Sportsline” whenever Olden is not available.

KTLA talked with Johnny Bench about replacing Torre, but Bench said Wednesday he has too many commitments in Cincinnati.

Torre said in a statement: “For the past five-plus seasons, I’ve had the pleasure of working with three fine organizations in the California Angels, KTLA and SportsChannel.”
