Club America’s first goal of the game, skidding about 35 yards past a field full of defenders, foreshadowed a long night for the East German national team.

The Club team from Mexico beat the East Germans, 3-1, in front of a Club America-partisan crowd of about 9,000 Wednesday night at Santa Ana Stadium.

Club America’s Antonio Santos gave his team a 1-0 lead about 10 minutes into the first half on a long shot from the sideline halfway between the goal and midfield. The shot skipped, from about 35 yards out, past defenders and East German goalkeeper Jens Weissgraeber.

“That was a beautiful shot,” said Enrique Wisnner, Club America organization’s vice president. “There was nothing the goalie could do because the ball bounced as it got to him.” Before clearing the long shot for the only goal of the first half, Club America had failed to score on two shots from in front of the goal.

Club America wasn’t able to keep up the pressure the rest of the half. But they turned up the heat with 20 minutes left to play, increasing the lead to 3-0.

With 17:02 on the clock, Eduardo Dos Santos fired a shot past Weissgraeber and two defenders to make the score 2-0.

The East Germans had the opportunity to put themselves back in the game a few minutes later when they landed a corner kick in front of Club America’s goal but kicked the ball wildly into the defenders’ legs and failed to score. With 13:03 left to play, Club America’s Luis Alves took a pass in front of the East German goal from Cristobal Ortega. Alves dribbled to the left to get clear and fired off another goal for Club America to make the score 3-0.

East Germany’s Juergan Rische made the final score 3-1 with 10:20 remaining. Rische took a shot that was blocked by Club America goalkeeper Adrian Chavez but Rische took the ball again as it rebounded away from Chavez and this time shot successfully.

The East German team was playing its last game in the United States. Next year it will be disbanded and a new national soccer team will be formed to represent a unified Germany.
