Country Wisdom: The wife of the late Walt Kelly, the cartoonist who created the “Pogo” strip, is working on a biography of her husband. Selby Kelly and her co-writer, Steve Thompson, have been searching newspaper clippings to reconstruct Kelly’s early days as a reporter. Kelly died in 1973 at age 60.

Can I Help?: Prominent Washington, D.C., lawyer Jack Olender sent a letter Sunday to U.S. Atty. Jay Stephens saying it’s not too late to plea-bargain the Marion Barry case, and offering himself as a mediator. Olender, who thinks Stephens will lose the case, took a poll of some local lawyers and said 52% believe Barry will be acquitted or there will be a hung jury on the perjury charges.

Ambush: Boston Herald lawyer Bob Dushman said Tuesday the lawyers for the publishers of Kitty Dukakis’ upcoming biography were “very threatening” after the tabloid on Sunday printed an unauthorized “sneak preview” of the book, “Now You Know.” The book claims Dukakis blamed her addiction problems on learning her mother was born out of wedlock.

Dog Days: An English setter that Vice President Dan Quayle’s 11-year-old daughter, Corinne, brought back from summer camp as a gift from Jim Quayle, her uncle, is the new companion for Breezy, the family’s female black lab. Breezy was named about the time of George Bush’s inaugural address, in which he referred to a new breeze blowing. The new dog, also female, is named Chilly.
