A fire set at a Simi Valley elementary school late Thursday night destroyed a classroom and $60,000 worth of property, authorities said.

The blaze did $50,000 worth of damage to the structure at Madera Elementary School, 250 Royal Ave., and destroyed $10,000 in classroom materials, Ventura County Fire Department spokeswoman Vicki Crabtree said.

Officials believe that arson caused the fire, she said.

About 40 firefighters from the Ventura County Fire Department responded to the fire about 11 p.m. and had it under control in about 30 minutes, she said.
