Politics of Jail Site
As far as I’m concerned the decision on the new jail was a political one.
The Board of Supervisors (excluding John Flynn) have always considered the northeast part of the county, which includes Santa Paula, Fillmore, Piru, etc., as a dump site for the county. Distribution of county funds to these areas are always at the minimum, such as for education, environment and public policy.
I am disappointed at Maggie Erickson, our supervisor, insisting on putting the jail on our precious greenbelt preserve, but I can understand her thinking. If she would have voted on the Camarillo site, where her constituents are the strongest, she would be a target for another VanderKolk-type person overthrowing her, which is very possible.
