LONG SHRIFT

Share

As a mother of three with a past history of infertility problems, I was drawn to Karen Stabiner’s critique of “New Options For Fertility” by Doctors Arthur Wisot and David Meldrum (“The Practical Mind,” July 1). After reading her review, was I amazed to discover that we both had read the same book!

Stabiner complains that the authors “give short shrift to the emotional aspects of infertility.” On the contrary, the book contains many accounts taken from the patients’ perspectives. For instance, through Cheryl Scruggs’ 30-day journey with IVF (in-vitro fertilization), the reader is able to identify with the emotional risks involved in this procedure. Anne Taylor Fleming’s touching description of her encounter at ZIFT (another introduced procedure) is yet another example.

Informative and helpful, this book has many suggestions to offer the reader; perhaps Stabiner could have absorbed more of this information sitting down quietly instead of “standing up in a bookstore” . . . FELICE HUNTER
