Getting there: Nine Los Angeles-San Diego trains, called San Diegans, depart from Los Angeles each day, stopping in Fullerton, Anaheim, Santa Ana, San Juan Capistrano, Oceanside and Del Mar.

In order to get to the Britt House late enough for immediate check-in but early enough for tea, the most convenient Los Angeles departure times are 10:50 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. The $30 round-trip fare is $35 on summer weekends.

The Britt House: 406 Maple St., San Diego 92103, (619) 234-2926. On weekends, some rooms are set aside for two-night customers. If you call within a week prior to your arrival and they’re still not booked, you may be able to book them for one night.
