WISE MOVES

I wish to thank the writers, producers, directors and actors of “Wiseguy” for the treatment they provided for mixed-race marriage-and love-and a sexual relationship for the legless Uncle Mike that was truly beautiful.

The “treatment” was no treatment, just human beings with honest caring and trust and mutual respect. It was the admirable lack of theatrical contrivance and finger-pointing (no questions from other characters or even conversational references to be sure the audience was getting the point), which impressed me. They answered questions the viewers might have by showing rather than telling and this allowed a gut-level audience acceptance that would have been impossible, I believe, if they had tried to verbalize the feelings.

The scene of Uncle Mike and his lover in bed was so sensual and tender and engaging that I “forgot” he was handicapped until he slid out of bed onto his wheelchair. No “big deal.” Just ordinary courage and honesty.

I thank all involved for opening my eyes when I didn’t even know I had them shut.
