Grammer Gets ‘House Arrest’

“Cheers” television star Kelsey Grammer pleaded no contest today to a felony cocaine possession charge, and a judge immediately ordered him placed under “house arrest” for 90 days.

Under the arrangement, an electronic surveillance device allows authorities to monitor his whereabouts. He will be permitted to continue his role as the pompous psychiatrist Frasier Crane on “Cheers.”

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James M. Coleman also placed Grammer on three years’ probation, fined him $500 and ordered him to perform 300 hours of community service. He was also ordered to enroll in a drug abuse treatment program.

“It seemed fair,” Grammer said after he was sentenced, adding he was pleased with the electronic “house arrest” arrangement. “I’ll be allowed to work.”

Grammer pleaded no contest to felony possession of cocaine. If convicted, the 35-year-old actor could have been sentenced to three years in prison.

In June, Grammer served a 30-day jail sentence for a drunken-driving conviction.
